* Understanding Scaled Scores in School Tests

When your child takes a national test, they receive a raw score—this is simply the number of questions they answered correctly. However, because test papers vary slightly in difficulty each year, these raw scores are converted into scaled scores to make results fair and consistent over time.

Scaled scores allow us to compare pupil performance from one year to the next, even though the questions change annually. For example, a scaled score of 103 in 2025 reflects the same level of achievement as a score of 103 in 2024.

A scaled score of 100 always represents the expected standard. If your child scores 100 or above, it means they’ve met the national benchmark for that subject.

Junior schools

We know from national data that pupils at junior schools, on average, have higher attainment scores at the end of key stage 2 than pupils at all other primary schools. However, on average, they also have lower progress scores. This may be for a variety of reasons and should be taken into account when comparing their results to schools which start educating their pupils from the beginning of key stage 1.
